Your First Apartment Checklist For West Lafayette

You toured the best place with the perfect floor plan for your first apartment. Now, you completed the agreement, packed your bags, and you’re ready for moving day. However, knowing what items you’ll want for your new apartment can be tricky. What should be on your first apartment checklist for West Lafayette?

Here’s a checklist of the basics that you should have when you move in. You might be able to bring some of these basic items from your old home, but for other things you might need to shop at IKEA or West Lafayette’s local furniture store. Online stores such as Amazon or Target are good places to find things at, too. We’ll also give you a short list of extra items that can make your first year more comfortable.

  • Blanket or comforter

  • Bedframe

  • Clothes hangers

Additional items:

West Lafayette First Apartment Checklist: The Living Room

The living room is the space where you’ll spend most of your time. It’s also the place where you’ll have friends and family sit in (although all get-togethers end up in the kitchen).

  • Couch or a few comfortable chairs

  • Additional seating

  • Coffee table

  • TV stand or entertainment center

  • Electronics such as TV and audio equipment

Also nice:

  • Side tables

  • Additional shelving for books, momentos, or accessories

  • Throw pillows and cozy blankets

  • Large area rug

West Lafayette First Apartment Checklist: The Kitchen/Dining Room

The kitchen is easier to know what you need for a new renter because a lot of of your bigger items -- like the stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher -- are already included. You only really need somewhere to sit in the dining area, but we recommend being able to seat at least four people. Even if you live by yourself, it’s nice to have room for a meal with friends or family.

  • Dining room table and chairs (for at least 4)

  • Dishware included plates, glasses, and silverware (4 place settings)

  • Mugs

  • Mixing spoon, can opener, spatula

  • Microwave-if not provided

  • A basic skillet or frying pan

  • A cookie sheet

  • A sharp chef knife

  • Pot for soup

  • Oven mitts

Also Nice:

  • Shelves or a buffet for extra dishes

  • Coffee maker

  • Salt, pepper, and other spices

  • Dish soap and scrub brush

  • plastic or glass storage containers

  • Corkscrew, cheese grater, and other cooking tools

  • A knife set with stand

  • Measuring spoons and measuring cups

  • Food -- It’s always helpful to move in with a fully-stocked fridge

West Lafayette First Apartment Checklist: The Bathroom

The bathroom is rather straightforward, as the shower, sinks, toilets, and medicine cabinets are already there. If you’re stocking a guest bathroom, it only requires toilet paper, hand soap, and a small towel. There are only a few essentials needed in your main or master bath but not as many as in other rooms.

  • Toilet paper

  • Soap

  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, and other individual sundries

  • Shampoo and conditioner

  • Bath and hand towels

  • Shower liner, curtain, and hooks

  • Toilet brush

Also Nice:

  • Floor mat

  • Cup or toothbrush holder
